Webinar June 2024 – JunProf. Uhl

On Wednesday, June 12, 2024, an online seminar on "Phospholipid-containing nanocarrier systems for oral peptide delivery" was held at 3.30 p.m. (CEST).

The speaker was JunProf. Dr. Philipp Uhl from Heidelberg University, Germany.

Abstract

The number of approved peptide therapeutics is steadily increasing with the most important representative currently being semaglutide, a GLP-1 analog. Since these drugs are commonly not suitable for oral administration, research on formulation strategies enabling oral administration is of vital interest. Besides co-administration strategies (e.g. the combination of the respective drug with an absorption enhancer), in past decades, phospholipid-based nanocarriers - in particular liposomes - have been exhaustively investigated as oral drug-delivery platform. However, despite their successful application as parenteral delivery vehicles, these nanocarriers have up to date not succeeded for oral administration.

Given the large number of published strategies, this is remarkable and the reasons shall be discussed in this presentation with main focus on strategies proven efficient in animal models.
