Webinar June 2022 – Dr. habil. Meister

On Wednesday, June 29, 2022, an online seminar on "How Transmission Electron Microscopy helps to understand soft matter aggregation?" was held at 3.30 p.m. (CEST).

The speaker was Priv.-Doz. Dr. habil. Annette Meister from the Martin Luther Univeristy Halle-Wittenberg, Germany.

Abstract

After a short introduction presenting the most recent examples in high resolution cryo electron microscopy (EM) of membrane proteins, this seminar was focused on morphological EM studies with self-assembled soft matter aggregates. Different preparation techniques for EM samples, as well as advantages, disadvantages, and artefacts of negative stain and cryo EM were discussed considering the following questions:

  • Negative stain or cryo EM: Is cryo always better?
  • Structural pathways of vesicle solubilization: Is there a limit?
  • Visualization of nanodiscs: What can we learn from negative stain and cryo EM?
