Webinar August 2022 – Professor Kuntsche

On Wednesday, August 24, 2022, an online seminar on "Asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation and light scattering methods for size determination of drug nanocarriers" was held at 3.30 p.m. (CEST).

The speaker was Assoc.-Prof. Dr. Judith Kuntsche from the University of Southern Denmark, Odense, Denmark.

Abstract

Nanotechnology is a highly emerging field in pharmaceutical sciences with the final goal to obtain a more specific drug action (drug targeting) and thus a more efficient and safer therapy. In addition to an adequate formulation strategy, size and homogeneity of the drug carriers are of uppermost importance to ensure their functionality and safety. The aim of this webinar is to introduce and compare the different light scattering techniques used for size determination of colloidal drug formulations. After short introduction of well-established techniques such as dynamic light scattering (DLS) and laser diffraction with sub-micron instrumentation, the potential of multi-angle light scattering (MALS) combined with sample fractionation (asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation, AF4) will be explored. Sample fractionation prior size determination by MALS does not only allow accurate determination of size distributions but can also provide structural information. In the end of the seminar, further applications of AF4 to analyze nanocarriers will shortly be summarized.
