The Phospholipid Research Center (PRC) supports non-commercial research projects that advance scientific knowledge of phospholipids and their applications, particularly in pharmaceutical research and development.
Our funding primarily focuses on PhD and postdoctoral research projects at academic institutions.

Who Can Apply?
Research proposals are generally submitted by a Principal Investigator (PI) or research group leader (e.g., Professor, Associate Professor, or Assistant Professor) seeking funding for a PhD or postdoctoral research position within their research group.
In exceptional cases, postdoctoral researchers may apply for funding for their own position. Such applications require written confirmation from the PI of the host research group, confirming their willingness to host the applicant and the availability of a suitable workplace and the necessary research facilities. This confirmation must be submitted together with the PRE-proposal.
PhD students are not eligible to apply for funding for their own positions.
How to Apply?Â
The PRC uses a two-stage application process consisting of a short PRE-proposal followed by a more detailed FULL-proposal. The use of the official PRC templates is mandatory. Please retain the formatting provided in the templates.
Stage 1 – PRE-Proposal
Submission deadline: April 30, 2027
Applicants first submit a short PRE-proposal (maximum 2 pages, excluding references) outlining the scientific concept, originality, and relevance of the proposed research to the phospholipid field.
PRE-proposals are evaluated by the PRC Scientific Advisory Council. Applicants receiving a positive evaluation will be invited to submit a FULL-proposal.
Stage 2 – FULL-Proposal (by invitation only)
Submission deadline: November 30, 2027
Invited applicants submit a detailed FULL-proposal (maximum 14 pages, excluding references), including the scientific background, research objectives, methodology, work plan, timeline, and budget.
FULL-proposals are evaluated by the PRC Scientific Advisory Council.
Submission Requirements
Please submit your application as one PDF file containing:
- Cover letter (maximum 1 page)
- Completed PRE- or FULL-proposal using the respective PRC template
- Literature references
- Short CV (maximum 1 page per PI; FULL-proposals only)
- For postdoctoral researchers applying for their own position: written host PI confirmation (required at the PRE-proposal stage)
All applications must be submitted in English (US) using the respective PRC template.

All proposals will be treated confidentially. Receipt of applications will be confirmed by email.
Funding Scope and Duration
The extent and duration of financial support depend on the scope and scientific merit of the proposed research project.
Funding is normally provided for:
- PhD projects: 3–4 years
- Postdoctoral projects: 1–2 years
Eligible Costs
PRC funding may cover the following expenses:
- Salaries: PhD students and postdoctoral researchers.
- Operating expenses: Chemicals, consumables, and animal experiments, normally limited to EUR 10,000 per year. Higher amounts require justification.
- Travel expenses: Primarily for participation in scientific events organized by the PRC. Travel to other project-related scientific events may also be supported.
Salary costs must be based on country-specific standards and justified by reference to official salary guidelines from relevant national funding organizations. Supporting documentation must be provided with the FULL-proposal.
Funding may cover the total eligible project costs or only a portion thereof.
Costs Not Covered
The PRC does not fund technical staff positions, equipment purchases, or additional institutional overhead costs.
Reporting and Publications
Interim and Final Reports
The PRC requires interim progress reports and a final report for funded research projects. Reporting milestones and submission dates are agreed upon as part of the project plan. Reports are made available to the PRC Scientific Advisory Council.

Financial Summary
Upon completion of the project, a brief financial summary must be submitted together with the final report. A simple tabular overview of the project funding received and the actual project-related expenses is sufficient.
Scientific Publications
Research findings should be published in reputable scientific journals.
All publications resulting from PRC-funded research must acknowledge the financial support provided by the Phospholipid Research Center (PRC) and include the PRC funding reference number assigned upon approval of the grant.
