Webinar December 2025 – Dr. Nehls

On Wednesday, December 10, 2025, an online seminar on "The Use of Liposomes in the Assessment of Antimicrobial Activity of Membrane-Active Compounds" will be held at 3.30 p.m. (CET).

The speaker will be Dr. Christian Nehls from Research Center Borstel, Leibniz Lung Center, Germany.

Abstract

Liposomes are not only used as smart delivery systems. For even longer, they have been a fundamental tool in membrane biophysics, used to study interaction processes at membranes under reduced conditions. In drug development, they can help to estimate the antimicrobial activity of compounds and provide insight into the mechanisms behind their activity.

Although the basic preparation methods for liposomes have remained unchanged for decades, more sophisticated techniques have been developed for specific applications. These include the preparation of asymmetric liposomes and the use of microfluidic setups for the preparation and handling of liposomes.

This webinar will explore (a) the conceptual considerations involved in selecting suitable model systems, (b) various biophysical techniques, such as fluorescence spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy, and (c) microfluidic-driven liposome generation and analysis.

Overall, we will elaborate on how liposome techniques can contribute to the development of compounds such as antimicrobial peptides by predicting their antimicrobial activity.
